Belated Happy Independence Day

Just home from a trip to the Tulsa, Oklahoma area to celebrate the 4th of July with friends and family.


After finding this little table at a garage sale, my sister and her family painted it to make it new again.
Isn't it cute?  
And the kids loved sitting on the deck eating watermelon on their own table.

We managed to fit a lot of things into a 48 hour getaway.


My hexi-box-to-go is all organized and I managed to start another hexagon project.
(that was hours on the road)
I am so slow when it comes to hand sewing...


We found a rustic furniture store close to my sister's house.  We were in furniture heaven and ordered a few pieces that will be delivered to our cabin in a few weeks.
Finally, after shopping for years, our living room will see some furniture.


Hubby helped with a little plumbing.  At least he earned our keep while we were there...hehe



But, best of all we were surrounded by love and great hospitality.
The food and company were perfect!

Back to reality...

Hexipop Swirl, My day in the "Be a Hexie Queen Blog Hop"

Today is my day to participate in "Be a Hexie Queen Blog Hop."  There has been great anticipation for this day.  Not only to show what I've completed, but to complete it.  It  has been a non-stop hexifest here at the cabin.

With out further ado, I present Hexipop Swirl.

This 70 inches of wonderful hexiness is made of 331 English Paper Pieces.  I hand pieced every one and have the scars to prove it.  (See previous post)  lol.

 
I foundation paper pieced the center and worked out from there.


This is how the pattern came about - colored pencils and hexie graph paper from Printable Paper.  I decided to make the quilt hexigon shaped for some fun, but I was thinking of those great big lollipops when I was creating the pattern.


We have a little park here in Dodge City with fairy tale play things which include Cinderella's coach and a castle.  Since we are princesses and queens  in the hop I thought I'd do a photo shoot there.

I pieced the back to make it as colorful as the front.  Those 60 degree triangles almost threw me for a loop, but with help from hubby and his calculator, it worked out perfectly.  My binding is pieced to match each side.

I quilted using one of the decorative stitches from my machine.  It really worked well with the walking foot.  I swirled from the center to the outer edges.  (That's not real clear, is it?) If you click on the pictures, you will see a larger picture which shows the details.



Wait, that's not all, believe it or not.  I managed one more hexie project, but this one is ALL by machine.  giggle, giggle.  This picture shows the vibrancy of the colors on the quilt.


This quilt is a gift to my niece, Maylie, so I made her a 12 x 22 inch pillow to match.    The flower petals are two sided and made to flap around. 

 
Maylie had her very first day of school this week and I bet she'll be ready to snuggle with her new quilt for a nap.  She will love the bright colors and she is so stylish that a Hexie quilt is perfect for her. (Yep, I'm a proud aunt)

Sewing with Band Aids

I know I haven't posted much lately, but I HAVE been sewing.  See...


Tomorrow is the beginning of the "Be a Hexie Queen Blog Hop" and my day is August 27th. 


 
I'm pretty sure a Hexie Queen wouldn't have fingers that look like this, so maybe I'm not the queen.  I'm sure having fun, though.  I just love playing with cardboard and fabric.

They say the weather is going to return to a heat wave, but we've been loving the cooler, RAINY weather.  Yes, I said rain.  It sure makes it easier to sew up a storm when the sky is nice and overcast.

A Weekend of Hair and Hexies

Just home from a quick 4 day working vacation weekend.  That is one day of working and one day of vacation and two days of driving. (Well, actually, I rode and hubby did the driving while I did some English Paper piecing...)

I was commissioned to fix hair for a wedding in Denver, Colorado and had a very wonderful time.  I couldn't have asked for better accommodations and wonderful clients to work with.

Hubby and I explored a little of Colorado the day after the wedding.  Our first stop was a trip to the IKEA store.  This was our first time and it was a bit overwhelming.  I did manage to buy a couple of items...  There is one item I will have to wait to share, but my favorite thing in the store was the SMYCKE wall clock.

 
A hexagon clock with pieces you can arrange any way you like.  This should be fun for my sewing room.

We took a little trip through Garden of the Gods, Manitou Springs, and Cripple Creek before heading home.  The Rocky Mountains in Colorado are beautiful and full of history.  We enjoyed great meals and each other's company.

We are so happy to be home and ready to get back into our routine.  It rained while we were gone!!!  We've had almost 3" in a week and a half.  I think that is more rain than we've had in a year and a half.  lol

Preparing the Nest



It has seems like the Project Quilting challenges have triggered snow around my house.  Pictures for the challenges have been so hard to come by when it snows and blows every time a project deadline is here.  Today was no exception.  (Maybe if I could have my project finished in the middle of the week, this wouldn't be a problem.)

Baby Quilt

Time was not on my side this week and I had to design something I could sew on the go.  English Paper Piecing was perfect.  The hexagons are scrappy  spring fabrics.  Applique and machine embroidery were other techniques used.  Quilting is a large zig zag both horizontal and vertical which was inspired by Norma Jean at Crazy Mom Quilts.
The back shows all the wonderful bumpy goodness.

This is now my favorite.  I just love the crisp white fabric with the bright colors.  The binding is so bright and fun and the ziggy quilting just makes me happy.  This will be the perfect gift for a baby.  If I can bear to part with it.
