Dimensional Football Block - The secret is fusible fleece!

With the National Football League season beginning this week
I was inspired to use
my favorite Therm-o-web products to design this little football quilt block.

Today I am over at the Therm-o-web blog  sharing how to put this
dimensional football applique quilt block together.
The dimension comes from a technique using

I couldn't wait to make a few more blocks to put together a wall hanging for this super sweet quilt display my hubby (Duck Creek Design) made for me.

Find all the details over at Therm-o-Web today so you can start your little football quilt
in time for the season!

Home and Heart - Flags on a Stick Blog Hop

With the arrival of spring, it's time to get outside and make our outdoor space ready for
warm entertaining.

(The calendar says spring is here.... )
The weather thinks otherwise.

Madame Samm at Sew We Quilt created a blog hop called "Flags on a Stick" where everyone is to design their very own garden flag.

I signed up to make a flag
and
hubby jumped on board to make a couple of garden flag poles for me.
:^)

A great big thank you to Thearica over at Pig Tales and Quilts for organizing the blogs participating in this hop.
She has done a great job!

Home

Welcome to Duck Creek

I made this flag to welcome guests to our home.
It represents our home with the cowboys (Dodge City)
and
the ducks (Duck Creek surrounds our home).

The background fabric is a piece I snow dyed that looks just like a Dodge City sunrise.
Black Kona fabric for the silhouettes.
I wrote the word welcome in chalk at the bottom and then covered the chalk lines with jute twine.
The twine was couched with zig zag in a matching thread.
I put a little fabric glue on the ends of the twine to keep it from fraying.

The cowboy sihloutte is my husband's pattern
that he cuts from metal.
There were some very narrow cuts for fabric, but I love the result.
I will have this pattern available soon.

Heart

My daughter is going to be married in October this year.
As the mother of the bride, I'm very happy for her.
I'm also a little sad.
(Is that normal?)
I suppose it is kind of like "empty nest syndrom" in a different kind of way.

I used this dress as part of the fabric for my next garden flag.
Don't worry, the dress had a few stains and wouldn't have been useable in any other way.
I'm not usually a saver of things, but I have a few special things from when my kids were little.
This is a surprise for her.

Wedding garden quilt.   "I Do"

We can wave this flag to greet guests at her wedding.

Then later, it will make a sweet wall hanging for her home.

The bride's dress is fabric from my daughter's little dress.
I used the lining and the lace overlay.
The wedding colors are to be purple and lime green.
Hubby, once again, made the flag holder
and I designed the pattern for the flag.

That is my home and heart.

Be sure and check out the other waving flags of the day.
There will be some beauties with this bunch, I assure you.

Velcome

Velcome to my treats for the Vicked Wicked Blog Hop.  My vampire and his little friends are very happy to see you here.

Velcome

First, let me thank Madame Samm for creating this Halloween party and Vendy Wendy for organizing this event.  Ve have all been so excited to share our vicked little creations.

Velcome is an appliqued quilt with a few tricks. I am a true vampire fan and have read all of the Anne Rice Vampire Chronicles as well as others.  I don't know why I like vampires, I just do.   I've named this one Mystat.  He's mine and my favorite vampire is Lestat.  If you are a vampire fan, you know who he is.  Mystat started out as a large drawing on freezer paper and slowly the details came together.

His hands and face were hand embroidered before the applique process began.  Mystat is cute and evil at the same time.  How does that happen?

A bald vampire?
A vampire isn't as handsome vithout hair.  I changed his medallion by fussy cutting and appliqueing some Costume Clubhouse Riley Blake fabric.  I felt it looked better, especially with the Velcome letters above.  His face is 3D with extra stuffing added to make it puffy.

After stippling his cape with bumps and stars, I decided to "man him up" a little with some free motion lightning bolts on the background.

Lightening bolt free motion quilting

A vampire needs friends, so I made a few vampire bats rats to keep him company.

Bats seem like the logical friends of a vampire, but having rats on the porch makes people jump a little more and ve like that...

My hubby made this vonderful stand to put my quilt on.  The Halloween bracket on top can be replaced with Christmas or other holiday decorations. He is a wonder with metal.   It looks like I will be making more quilts of this size to accommodate my new quilt stand.  Vhat a great vay to velcome our guests.

If you aren't villing to leave a little blood, you should go on over to the other stops on this trick or treating excursion.  There are many treats ahead.  Thank you for visiting my little stop.

Natural Charm for Charity

Natural Charm was made for the Hands 2 Help Charity Quilt Challenge over at Confessions of a Fabric Addict and will be donated to Quilty Hugs for Happy Chemo.

Natural Charm quilt
You may remember this quilt from this post. I had a lot of trouble with my machine and with thread breaks. Since I was on a deadline for my May goal, the binding was done by machine and it was GREAT! I don't know if I saved time by doing it this way (pinning took forever), but it was fun getting out of my little hand stitching box.

Fabrics: one charm pack (Love Letters Batiks by Moda) and a light neutral batik yardage from my stash.
Pattern: 9 patch with borders.
Quilting: Stippling and leaves by me on my domestic.
Size:  50 1/2" x 50 1/2"

Machine stitched binding

The binding was pieced with a charm pack (Love Letters Batiks by Moda) cut in half and sewn end to end.  The binding was sewn to the back first using the double fold binding technique and then wrapped over to the front.  About a thousand pins were used to hold it in place and I picked a swirly design from the stitches on my machine to sew the binding down on the front.  That binding isn't going anywhere...lol

Picture taking fun
Edyta Sitar has Laundry Basket Quilts, Carla has Disc Golf Basket Quilts.  My hubby loves the sport of disc golf, so he is making his own baskets in his Duck Creek Design workshop and is building a course on our land.   Picture taking, for me, is taking on a life of it's own...

It's amazing what a couple of days can do for healing.  I was crushed with the troubles I had with my machine and threads on this quilt, but I'm ready to "get back in the saddle again."  I really love this quilt and am so happy to be donating it to such a great cause.

I am on a quest to find my perfect thread.  What thread do you use for Free Motion Quilting?  Suggestions please.  I can't quilt another one until I find a thread that works for me.

Thanking everyone for help,

Welcome to Duck Creek - It's for the Birds Blog Hop

I am thrilled to be part of the "It's for the Birds Blog Hop" and want to thank  Mary and Madame Samm for organizing the hop!  Every thing is ducky here on the last day of the hop.

I knew right away when this hop was announced what I was going to do.  I live in a cabin surrounded by a creek, (when we aren't in a drought)...  Anyway, the creek is called Duck Creek and I needed a quilt with ducks for my Duck Creek bedroom. And not too girly either, I have to share the room you know.   I finished 3 projects for this blog hop.  Crazy....for me.

My first thought was to embroider ducks on a quilt and when I asked hubby what he thought, he handed me a drawing he had designed for his metal work.  I was good to go.  If it works for metal it had to work with fabric and thread.

Duck Creek Design duck pattern embroidered with stem, slip and back stitch

The inspiration for the quilt came from here.  The fabric was a prize I won from my dear friend in the UK, Jen, over at Glinda Quilts.  (I can finally share the finish with you, my dear) It was perfect for this rustic quilt.  Flying ducks, standing ducks, and swimming ducks decorate the quilt.

I worked on some free motion skills with the quilt and had fun making a scrappy binding.  In fact, between making the binding and the two pillows, there aren't many scraps.  The quilt is 49" x 49".  Yep, that's a hay bail it's sitting on.  It was so windy....it practically stayed on without clips.

Duck pattern in metal
The reverse appliqued duck pillow was a bit of a challenge to cut out, but since it was my hubby's drawing, I wanted it to be perfect nice.  :)  I lucked out and found some yardage of some of the same fabric from the quilt and was able to make the duck pillow. The top fabric was fused to the Kona snow.  I used scraps from the quilt for the top and bottom to make it a 24" x 24" pillow.

Duck pattern in fabric
I couldn't have a duck theme here with out a Duck and Ducklings quilt block.  A duck can be more than just a bird.  There are a lot of classic quilt block patterns with ducks in the name.  There are duck tracks, duck paddles, and even ducks foot in the mud.  I used Kona snow and more scraps from the quilt to make the pillow.  It is a 14" pillow.

Duck and Ducklings

Here is where my lovely ducks will roost.  I'm so happy to have more ducks around.

 That's my duck story.

I'm quacking myself up...

Don't be a sitting duck.  Fly or paddle on over to the other feathered friends:

Homemade Christmas

The new year will be here in a few hours so I wanted to share a little Christmas before 2012 is over.

Clockwise: Stocking hung on the stair case; Amazing Grace Metal Cross; Coffee Filter Wreath; Chalkboard Cookie Jars; Painting on Canvas; Cheese Roll; Sharpie Baked Mug

This year we shared more homemade gifts with our family than ever before.  The gift exchange at my husband's family was a dirty Santa homemade gifts exchange.  It was so cool.  Everyone brought something they had made and we took turns opening the gifts and stealing from each other.  I wish I had taken pictures of the gifts everyone made.  My mother-in-law crocheted a beautiful doily and my sister-in-law made ceramic bowls.  Even my teenage niece made a scarf.  My son came home and in one afternoon made a sharpie ceramic cup for his sister and a painting for the dirty Santa exchange.  My husband cuts metal and made several Amazing Grace crosses for gifts.  My daugter is a fantastic cook and made a huge tin of different Christmas candies.

Chalkboard Label Cookie Jars
My son and I turned to Pinterest for our ideas for the gift exchange.  I made Chalkboard Label Cookie Jars complete with cookies, extra chalk, extra labels, (my hubby cut the labels with the Silhouette vinyl cutter), an eraser, and a gift card. I purchased the jars at Walmart and the chalkboard vinyl came from Hobby Lobby.  The cookies are so easy.

Cake Mix Cookies
Cake Mix Cookies

1 cake mix (any flavor)
1/2 cup vegetable oil
2 eggs
1 cup of chocolate chips or nuts
Preheat oven to 350.  Mix cake mix with oil and eggs.  Add chips and nuts.  Drop by tablespoon size onto cookie sheet.   Bake at 350 for 13-15 minutes.  This recipe makes 2 dozen cookies.

For the chocolate cookies, use a chocolate cake mix and add 1/2 cup of chocolate chips and 1/2 cup peanut butter chips.  For chocolate chip cookies, use a yellow cake mix and 3/4 cup of chocolate chips and 1/2 cup of pecans.  Let you imagination lead you and have fun.

It's not Christmas here until the Cheese logs are made for the holiday season.  This recipe was my grandmother's and always reminds me of her.  That song, "Grandma Got Run Over by a Reindeer" also brings back memories of her.  She was a nut and I loved her so.

Southern Cheese Roll

2 lbs. cheddar cheese
1 c. pecans
1/4 t. garlic powder
1/2 lb. Velveeta
1/2 t. seasoned salt
1 8oz pkg. cream cheese
1 t. Worcestershire sauce

3 T. chili powder
3 T. Paprika

Grind cheddar cheese and pecans in food grinder.  (I use the food processor)  Mix in garlic powder, Velveeta, seasoned salt, cream cheese and Worcestershire.  Work with hands to knead until well blended.  Shape mixture into rolls about the size of small crackers and about 6 to 7 inches in length.  Roll the log in a mixture of chili powder and paprika.  Wrap in waxed paper and chill.  Slice to serve.  Makes 7 or 8 rolls.

Now to cut up some cheese and get my New Year on!
Happy New Year,
