Rainbow Wild Star and MORE - Sweet on You Challenge

  Welcome
to the Sticks
and
 the second day of the
"Sweet on You Challenge"

Here is my finished
Rainbow Wild Star Quilt.

Joan at MooseStashQuilting invited a great group of Bloggers to
create something inspired by something they are sweet on.
Thanks, Joan, for inviting me!

First off, I am sweet on rainbow quilts.
My favorite color pallet is RAINBOW and rainbow scrappy is even more of a
"sweet on you" for me.

I participated in the Wild Star Sew-Along over on Instagram
with
If you click on Lindlee, she still has the pattern info available
in her stories under the Wild Star SAL tab.

Sorry about the creases, but I just unpacked this quilt.

Here is why:

We are sweet on our Kansas City Chiefs football!
Tradition says that if the Chiefs make it to the Super Bowl,
we have to watch it in Las Vegas
at a certain party, in a certain booth,
wearing the same shirts...
you get the idea.

We just had to do our part for the WIN.
The year we didn't go watch the super bowl in Vegas, 2021 (covid), our Chiefs lost.

And since we were going to Vegas, there were a couple of other
 "sweet-on-you"
things we wanted to do!

Visiting my friend Carol at Just Let Me Quilt was "sweet on you" number 1!
She had just signed up for a class at one of our favorite quilt shops,
to make seam rippers.  I was sooo in!

Eye protection first, I was so scared -
Carol was so brave and showed us all how it was done.

It starts out as a block of wood.  You can see it on the lathe.

It's so fun to play once the nerves settled down...

Zach was a great teacher.
We handled the power tools like champs!

And our final "sweet" results-

Carol's is on the left and mine is the red multi
Can you be "sweet on you" with a seam ripper?

Another "sweet on you" thing we like to do in Las Vegas is watch
our favorite college baseball player at the College of Southern Nevada

I had taken the Rainbow Wild Star quilt to Las Vegas to get pictures,
this is not what I had in mind:

It was freezing in Vegas so I was glad the quilt had made the trip with us.
I was double "sweet on you" for this quilt with a minky fabric backing that day.

Check out the others that are "sweet on you" today:

In the end, we made it home with the win and "sweet on you" memories!
Challenge complete!

Happy Super Bowl Sunday!!

Super Bowl Sunday
is
always a holiday around here.
But this year it's even better!

We are so excited to watch the game and cheer on our Chiefs!

We've waited a long time to see the Chiefs make it back to the Super Bowl...
50 years is a very long time.
We've been so close so many times.
No more heartbreak, we have a great team this year!

Let's GOOOOO!!!

It's going to be a great day!

Game Plan 2 - Project Quilting Season 10, Project 1

This is the first challenge of Season 10 of
Project Quilting.

I'm excited to join in this challenge, "Hope Springs Eternal."

My entry:

Game Plan 2

I've been hoping for a great season from my Chiefs (forever)
and
this might be the year.

There is always HOPE!!

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Kim at Persimon Dreams hosts Project Quilting
and
this is the 7th year I've participated.
Kim announces a challenge and you have one week to create something quilty.
Prizes can be won and it's a great way to meet new blogging friends.

The rules:

1. Your project should be about hope. It doesn’t have to be obvious, but you do have to be able to explain how it relates to the theme.
2. Projects need to be created during the week of the challenge (started on or after January 6, finished by January 13).
3. Your project does not need to be a traditional quilt, but must meet at least one of these three requirements: include patchwork, include appliqué, have 3 layers stitched together by hand or machine.
4. Incomplete or unfinished does not qualify. Every challenge piece must be a FINISHED project seen through from INCEPTION to COMPLETION during the challenge timeline.
5. Link up by Sunday, January 13 at noon CST

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Game Plan 2 wasn't my first Game Plan...

When the challenge was announced, I knew it was the title of a movie and I spent the week trying to find a moment to watch it.  Once I did,
the movie inspired me to search for an organization to donate a quilt.

I found the perfect one:

Quilts for Cure

PROVIDING QUILTS FULL OF HOPE, LOVE, AND SMILES TO KIDS FIGHTING CANCER

I love the thought of making a quilt to give a sweet child comfort.

So I started making quilt blocks.

I finished the quilt top with time to quilt it before the Chiefs playoff game on Saturday.

And then...
the power to my machine was interrupted by a much anticipated heated bathroom floor insulation
and
I was not standing in the way of my new heated bathroom floor.
I love this challenge, but my feet are anxiously awaiting that floor!

So, I made the decision to put my donation quilt aside
and
come up with plan B.
(this happens with Project Quilting sometimes)

I will finish my donation quilt later and won't have to hurry the quilting and binding.

Game Plan 2- A lighter approach to the challenge:

I have been a Kansas City Chiefs football fan most of my adult life.

As a fan of this team, I have known heartbreak
and
have only had a taste of what success in the postseason playoffs could be like.
I've had hope for my team
and
This year there is HOPE once again.

So after the Chiefs' victory on Saturday, I decided on
Game Plan 2.

I grabbed my Chiefs fabric
and
a pattern, Dimensional Football Quilt Block, I designed for Thermoweb
and
made a potholder.

Dimensional Football Block - The secret is fusible fleece!

With the National Football League season beginning this week
I was inspired to use
my favorite Therm-o-web products to design this little football quilt block.

Today I am over at the Therm-o-web blog  sharing how to put this
dimensional football applique quilt block together.
The dimension comes from a technique using

I couldn't wait to make a few more blocks to put together a wall hanging for this super sweet quilt display my hubby (Duck Creek Design) made for me.

Find all the details over at Therm-o-Web today so you can start your little football quilt
in time for the season!

First String Stockings

If you are a regular reader, you are probably thinking I am a one trick pony lately.  Football, football, football...

You are right.

So one last football / Christmas project (you are saying, "it's January, Carla...").  I'm only a month behind.  I'm thinking, "not bad."  I am more prepared for next Christmas than I was for this last one.   lol

This is my project for:

NFL stockings - First String

These stockings are for two of my favorite NFL football fans - my kids.

They love it when the Tennessee Titans and Kansas City Chiefs play each other and they try to attend the game together.

I had a ton of scraps from making this quilt and this quilt.  When Kim over at Persimon Dreams announced the new season for Project Quilting and it was string quilts, I new it was my chance to make these stockings that have been in the back of my mind for a while.

I string pieced these on batting and then lined them and string pieced a cuff for the top.  I also made sure to make a big loop for hanging.

I've started the year with a little scrap busting with this challenge, too.  YEAH ME!

A complete finish with labels.

Have a great weekend,

Reserved Stadium Seating - Tutorial

If you've ever sat on hard bleachers, you will want to make one of these.

This is a special stadium cushion for a grandmother that attends every single game her grandchildren are in.  She will always have a reserved seat at the big game.
Here is how to make your own stadium cushion for the big game.  I've included both the personalized stadium seat and the football stadium seat cushion in this tutorial.

Stadium Cushions

For a personalized cushion
Supplies:

 1 - 1"x15"x17" foam
20" x 41" muslin
19" x 40" batting
2 - pieces of cotton fabric 17 1/2" x 19 1/2"
1 - 8" piece of cording

For letters:
Fusible applique (like HeatNBond)
Letters printed from a computer
Fabric

Fold one of the pieces of fabric in half both ways and press to make straight lines as a guide for appliqueing the letters.

Prepare the letters.  I like to skip steps to speed this process.  First I print letters in my desired font and size from my computer and cut them apart.  I fuse the HeatNBond to the back of the fabric then pin the letters to the front of the fabric.  Then I just cut out the letters.  No tracing, no trying to figure out the reverse, and I can cut out several of the same letters out at one time by stacking the fabric under the pinned letter.  Fast and easy.

Using the pressed lines as guides, layout the letters and fuse according to the manufacturer's instructions.

I used a blanket stitch to stitch around all the letters.  You want to make it durable because it is a cushion that will be used to sit on.

With right sides together, stitch the two fabric pieces together using a 1/2" seam.  Press seam open.
(Football cushion continue here)
Create a quilt sandwich with the muslin on bottom, batting in the middle, and cushion cover on top.  Baste.  I pin baste.
Quilt as desired.  I quilted free motion with loop de loops.  Straight lines would be great too. Trim the excess batting and muslin off.
Once quilted, fold in half lengthwise and mark center at the end shown.  Measure 2" on each side of the center pin to place the ends of the cord.  Sew the ends in place (as shown above) an 1/8" from the ends.

Fold the quilt in half with right sides together and pin.  Leave a 7 inch space at one end for turning.

Stitch around the edges (not the folded edge) with a 1/2" seam leaving the 7-inch opening.
Clip the corners and turn right side out.

Now for the fun part, stuff that foam into the cushion cover.  I fold mine in thirds and then stuff it in pulling it into the corners.

Pin the opening closed.  You can slip stitch it, if you would prefer, but I'm always cutting corners, so...

I pin around the outside all around (pulling out the corners really well as I go),  and then top stitch, using a walking foot, 1/4" from the edge.

All that's left to do is go to the game and never have a sore bottom again.

If you want to make a football stadium seat.  You will follow the same instructions, except there will be a little piecing for the top.

For a football cushion
Supplies:

 1 - 1"x15"x17" foam
20" x 41" muslin
19" x 40" batting
1 - piece of brown cotton fabric 12" x 18"
2 - pieces of brown cotton fabric 3" x 18"
2 - pieces of white cotton fabric 3" x 18"
1 - 20" x 18" piece of your favorite team fabric (or brown)
1 - 8" piece of cording

For laces
Fusible applique (like HeatNBond)
Laces are drawn on 1/4" graph paper using the diagram below

1/2" seams are used to put the cushion cover together.

Draw out and cut the laces.  Fuse the back of white fabric and once again pin your drawing to the top of the fabric and cut it out.

Fold the 12" x 18" piece of fabric in half and then in half again and press.  This is your guide to center the laces.  Fuse (according to manufactures instructions) and stitch around the laces.  I like a blanket stitch, but use your favorite.  It needs to be durable.

Once the laces are attached, sew one white strip to one brown strip with 1/2" seam allowances.  Repeat.  Now sew each strip set to each side of the lace panel like in the finished picture.  Sew the team fabric right sides together to the football panel you made using a 1/2" seam and sewing it on a 18" side.  This will make a long cushion cover that you will quilt.  Go above to the quilt sandwich instructions and continue from there.

My Chiefs play tomorrow in the playoffs!
GO CHIEFS!
