Wonkaholic and Blogiversary #1 Giveaway

January 2013 is almost over and I have a few things to catch up here.  A finish, a big win, and a celebration giveaway!

My Wonky Log Cabin quilt, a former UFO, is finished.  I call it "Wonkaholic" because this quilt only came about because of my addiction to making blocks for The Hurricane Sandy Quilt Drive over at Quilting Gallery.  The tutorial for making the blocks is here.  Watch out, making the block is addictive.  It measures 54" x 66".  The quilting was inspired by a post from Crazy Mom Quilts

I finished the binding today, sewing between clients and while color processed at work.  I knew I would run out of day light before I could take my usual pictures at home, so these pictures were taken at the salon.  My co-workers think I'm nuts.  Their input was that the back was as pretty as the front.  Too bad the back is a cheater...lol  Now I can join the party at A Lovely Year of Finishes 2013 for January.

January is the month of my Blogiversary!  I have had so much fun blogging and can hardly believe it's been a year.  Jennifer over at Glinda Quilts celebrated hers recently and I was the winner of her giveaway.  Look at what arrived in my mailbox this week.  What a great package - complete with a pants bag she made just for me with a label inside.  I will cherish this from my new blogging friend.  She has way better pictures of my bag here.  Thank you, Jennifer!

A beautiful pants bag, and lots of fabric and goodies

Trippin' in Aqua

I am participating in Season 4 of  Project Quilting over at Persimon Dreams. This weeks challenge was:

My Entry is called, Trippin' in Aqua.

Trippin' in Aqua, Around the World Pattern

Trippin' in Aqua was made in Dodge City, Kansas and is 48" x 48".

I've been sewing like a mad woman to get this finished.  I wasn't planning on a larger quilt, but as I made blocks, I fell in love. I only wish I had time to make it bigger.

I was inspired by the quilt along over at www.flickr.com/groups/scrappytripalong/
It seems like everyone is joining up to make the Scrappy Trip Around the World with the tutorial over at Quiltville by Bonnie Hunter. http://quiltville.com/scrappytrips.shtml

My plan was to use my aqua scraps and incorporate the "Scrappy Trip Along" with this challenge. My mind was changed with the first block (when I fell in love),  and I decided to go with the trip around the world.

I quilted each trip around with the dual feed foot.  This was the first time I used polyester batting and found that it really made the quilting stand out.

Whew, That was a lot of sewing in less than a week.

I need to quit work for more quilting time :^)

Squares with Heart Pillow

I discovered a fun new challenge this year that I am going to participate in over at Persimon Dreams.
Becky over at Solar Threads inspired me to join this challenge.  She made a beautiful quilt with batiks.
Squares with Heart Pillow

Squares with Heart Pillow is for the first challenge.  In this challenge the inspiration was Square in a Square.

My inspiration was the log cabin. I've been busy making wonky log cabin blocks and having a blast. I made this a little wonky and quilted it even a little wonkier. There is a square in every square with a little heart boxed in. I've never made a pillow before and wanted to challenge myself with that. I finished it so that I can remove it off the pillow to wash it or change it..  It's a 14" pillow.

I'm excited to challenge myself with Project Quilting - Season 4. I hope to work it in...

Snow Dye Fabric and a Fabric Postcard

Yesterday was spent dyeing fabric with a snow melt method and today was spent playing with the fabric. 12 fat quarters of lovely.

Fabrics Hand Dyed with Snow Method
Here are pictures of the process. Hubby and I had a blast and the results were amazing.  The kit is from Hands on Hand Dyes.  We used the Playgrounds Snow Dye Kit.

After soaking the 12 fat quarters of fabric in soda ash, the fabric is gathered up and sat on a prepared platform.

Snow is packed on top of the fabric.  That is snow from our yard.

The fabric dye is then "squirted" on the snow.

The snow is then allowed to melt into the fabric.  It takes several hours.

Once the snow is melted, the fabric is rinsed in hot water.

The fabric is washed in the washing machine, dried, and pressed.

Now to have fun with this beautiful fabric.

Fabric Postcard

I made my first fabric post card and I used some snow dye fabric.  This will be sent to Kisha in Arizona.
Kisha, has stage IV terminal breast cancer and my niece has started a card shower for her on facebook. Here is the link -  Cards for Kisha.  I don't know Kisha, but it sounds like she could use a little lot of love sent her way.  Please take time to send a card if you can.  Wouldn't it be cool if she ended up with bags and bags of mail?  I'm so proud of my niece for her support of people in need.

Prayers for Kisha,

A Lovely Year of Finishes 2013

It's a new year and I, like many others, am trying to set my sewing goals. I have joined some classes and a quilt-along. Today I am starting to gather all those ufo's and make THIS year A Lovely Year of Finishes.  I'm hoping by joining this group, I will finish the year with nothing in the UFO box.  A girl can dream....

Scrappy Wonky Log Cabin Throw

This is my January goal.  What was supposed to be a gift for a Christmas exchange is now my first UFO for 2013.  I would like to have this quilted and the binding finished by the end of January.  Ambitious, yes, but I have been commissioned to make a t-shirt quilt for a graduation gift and need to finish this before I get started on that project.

A Lovely Year of Finishes

I have to finish up the snow dye fabric and will be back with that later today,

New Year with SNOW. A dyers dream..

There is snow in my backyard.  SNOW + FABRIC = Afternoon DELIGHT!

I have a fabric dyeing kit from Hands on Hand Dyes just waiting to come out of the box and I'm going out to the sewing room to get started. I will post tomorrow to show off the results.

Congratulations to my friend, Jennifer over at Glinda Quilts, on her 1 year blogging anniversary and 100th blog post.  My quilting friend across the pond is an inspiration and has a lot of blogging fun.  She has a great giveaway going on for the celebration.
