Miles of Beach - Salt and Sand

  Welcome to the first day of the

Salt and Sand Blog Hop!

I'm happy to kick things off with
Miles of Beach!


Carol of Just Let Me Quilt has invited bloggers to make an ocean/sand-themed project. 
After all, we are all dreaming of vacation and the beach would be a great place to escape.

Thank you, Carol, for inviting me to join this super fun blog hop!


Visiting with my hubby one day, I told him my favorite place to run is on the beach.
His response was, "I'll take you to the river bed where there are miles and miles of beach!" 

That's where the name of this quilt comes from.

We have lots of sand with no water here in Dodge City, Kansas.  You see, our river is dry.
The Arkansas River runs through Dodge and although it has lots of water to the west in Colorado and 30 miles to the east of us there is water, here there is none.  
Just miles and miles of sand.

So I took my ocean colors to the river bed for some sand pictures.


I'm working on scrap management this year so I pulled my blues and cut 1 1/4" strips.
I randomly made log cabin "ish" blocks, wrapped them in sand-colored fabric, and cut them wonky.  The border is from the strips too.

The completed quilt is about 62" x 72".
Perfect to lay on the sand...


if you can avoid the traffic.  haha

Yes, those are tire tracks.  
That's about all there is to do at the river, 4-wheel drive in the sand.
The sand gets quite loose and deep in some areas.


I can only dream of a trip to the beach with real water.
But for now, I will live through my friends.

    You have taken your scraps and made a lovely quilt. A large river runs through my city on its way to the ocean about 30 miles away. I love the beach. I think I would find a dry riverbed full of sand a bit sad if not for your lovely quilt to brighten it. Nay your day be a bright and happy as your quilt. Thanks for sharing in the hop ... <3 Pat

    A super quilt, Carla! I love all that ocean/sea color framed in sand. That great border is a perfect framing for the wonky blocks. A whole lotta scrappy goodness here. You can spread your quilt out and sunbath while imagining an inviting river of water at your feet. At least until a truck drives by. Ha! I love your husband’s sense of humor and I’m glad you went for it to get these fun beach photos with your quilt.

    Love your quilt and the colours do represent the colour of the beach.
    I am lucky enough to go for a morning dip every morning in the warm weather .

    Love your quilt. Now, I am kind of a history buff, so is this Dodge City the same Dodge City as Gunsmoke? Yes. I love old t.v. shows.

    I live in Colorado (farther north than where the Arkansas River flows), but didn't know anything about what happens to the river when it gets your way, so had to go read about that before I could comment! I'm so sorry there's no water in your area of the river! You made lemonade out of those lemons with your beautiful beachy quilt. Love the blues and tans you've put together there!

    Your quilt is so beautiful, Carla, with a definite beach feel to it. I love that you're using your scraps to make so many incredible things. Putting blue scraps together in log cabins and then that incredible scrappy border is amazing! Thanks for the inspiration!

    Who knew that you had such nice sandy beaches? LOL! A little water to go with them sure would be nice though. You nailed the theme with your scrap management this year. What a fun way to use up "stuff".

    Let's hear it for a string beach quilt!! I love you Kansas beach!! My Dad grew up in Missouri but moved to Los Angeles when he was first married to mom. I guess he was craving real waves. I love your wonky log cabin blocks and the setting where you photographed the quilt. It's a wonderful quilt and it will be wonderful anywhere...with or without water.

    Great quilt, Carla! I feel your pain regarding sand and see. We have similar “ beaches”! Ours might be a bit more rocky! 😁 And full of 4-wheeler tracks and DUST! But a girl can dream and your quilt will “take you there!”

    Lol Miles of beach...isn't that too cute for a name. Makes me a bit sad to hear of 'no water' and sure do wonder about that. How long has there been 'no water'? Love your quilt and how you added the label at the back using another partial block. Fabulous.

    I love your quilt and that you used scraps. I'm also into scrap management this year but unfortunately they still seem to be breeding! I'm also interested in geography so your picture of the dry river bed had me visiting google maps to see just were the photos fit in America.
