We are sad that our Kansas State Wildcat Football Team lost last night.  It was fun to be ranked #1 for a week.  We will see how this one loss effects the rankings.

How Do You Give?

Did you know 25,000 people die a day from hunger?  What about 6 million children a year? 

Yesterday I hung out with over 1000 people in my community packaging meals to send to Africa.  This is the third year my family has participated in this event with the encouragement from my mother-in-law, who has headed up this local effort. 


Here is a bit of an article I found on Numana's web site about my husband's mom, Norma Henton:

"It’s the legacy of the Wild West; strong, independent, salt-of-the-earth characters with a rugged edge. Banding together to feed the hungry overseas doesn’t naturally fit this oft-perceived profile and yet this Western Kansas community of 25,000 has challenged all the stereotypes.

The story begins with a regular lady on a regular Sunday visiting a church far way from home in Kansas City, MO. While there, Norma Henton heard of an organization called Numana and their dedication to “save the starving” and provide opportunities for hundreds of thousands of people across the U.S. to participate in the process. Currently, over 22.5 MILLION meals have been hand-packaged by volunteers and sent oversees to places where the need for food is greatest. Norma was captivated by what she heard and she bravely contemplated whether she could do this in her hometown.

 

Back home in Dodge City, she couldn’t shake the images and the desire to be a part of this new “movement” called Numana. But she was just one person, a former kindergarten teacher and grandmother. The idea gnawed at her. Finally, she gave in and placed a call to Numana to learn how to host an event in Dodge City. As Norma says, she quickly learned that it only “takes a spark to start a fire".”

Yesterday we packaged over 216,000 meals to send to the starving.  It took a whole day with over 1000 people, but the experience is one of those "warm and fuzzy feeling inside" kind of things that you just need to do.  You don't just get together with friends and make meals to send.  Someone has to raise the funds to make it happen.  My mother-in-law, along with her committee, raised over 50,000 dollars this year to buy the materials necessary to package the meals.  She's pretty amazing.  She's a quilter too!

I just wanted to share her story and inspire others to give.  I have signed up for a project to make quilts for the people of Hurricane Sandy.

I've Been Tagged, a fun blogging game

I've been TAGGED.  Sylvia at Sylvia's Stitches has tagged me to play along.  I haven't been tagged before, so I'll give it a try.

Here are the rules:

Let's get started:  11 things about me

1. I live in Dodge City, Kansas.  Yes we drive cars, not covered wagons.
2. I have lived in Kansas most of my life and am very happy about it.  The middle of the United States is a great place to be.
3. My husband is my best friend and I love him so much.  We have been married 14 years.
4. We have a daughter (25) and a son (22).  They are the joy in our lives.  (I could go on and on here about how smart and giving and loving and creative and pretty and handsome they are, but I'll save that for another time.)
5. My family lives mainly in Kansas and Oklahoma.  I'm the oldest of 3 children and I have step siblings too.
6. I have been a hairstylist for 23 years.  Hair is such a great art form.  I've worked with some of my friends for over 22 years and they are like family.
7. I've been sewing since I was in middle school.  My mom and grandmother were my inspirations.  Sewing of any sort is my hobby of choice.
8. I like to be organized and I cannot function in clutter. (stole this one from Sylvia)
9. My husband and I bought a cabin in the country two years ago and will be here the rest of our lives.  We love it so much.
10. I have a love, hate relationship with running.  How can something that hurts so much, make you feel so good.  I like to run 5K races.  I try to run at least 3 times a week.
11. I played volleyball in college and am a sports fan.  I'm still hung over from lack of sleep during the Olympics.

Now here are the 11 questions I got asked: 

1. What time of the day or evening do you do most of your crafting?
I usually don't have a certain time of day, it's mainly only weekends. I work 12 hour days so it's not really possible to do much else on those days.
2. If money was not a concern, what would be the next machine or toy you would buy for your craft?
No question, the Berinina 830 sewing machine. I want a quilting rack to hold it also.
3. How long have you lived in your current city?
I have lived here 2 years. I lived 30 miles away before.
4. How many states and/or countries have you resided in?
3 states. Pennsylvania (born), Oklahoma (3 years), Kansas (the rest) lol
5. Do you have any pets?  What kind?
My girls, 2 sweet dogs. Deogie (black lab/healer mix) and Mollie (irish setter)
6. What is your favorite TV show?
My favorite show just had it's last season - Weeds.  It was so funny.  The states of Colorado and Washington must have watched it too.
7. Do you prefer to read a physical book on use an e-reader device like a Kindle? 
I haven't read one on a device, but I think I would be ok with it. A lot of my friends have enjoyed reading "Fifty Shades of Grey" on their devices so no one knew what they were reading.  funny.
8. Where is your favorite place to vacation?
Las Vegas where it is warm and fun. I love to take my early morning run down the strip. So many funny scenes at 6 am in Vegas.
9. Do you prefer to dine-in or go out to eat?
I prefer to eat at home if I don't have to cook it or clean it up.  Pick it up and eat it at home.
10. What is your favorite recipe you like to prepare?
Spaghetti sauce. It always reminds me of good family times and my mom.
11. What did you eat for breakfast?
You caught me on an odd day. Eggs and sausage was today's breakfast. Usually I have dried fruit and nuts. Always have COFFEE.
